You have budget for one hire and two job titles on the whiteboard. One says GTM Engineer. One says RevOps Manager. Your CRO wants the first, your CFO has heard of the second, and the two drafts in the shared doc read 90% the same. That is not a coincidence, and it is not your writing. When someone actually diffed the postings, 9 out of 10 responsibilities that appear in GTM engineer reqs also appear in RevOps reqs — meaning the duty list is not the decision. Scope and comp band are. Here is how to pick.
The duty lists are nearly identical — stop reading them for the answer
Both reqs say “own the tech stack.” Both say “build and maintain automation.” Both say “partner with sales and marketing leadership.” Both say “improve data hygiene.” Both say “report on pipeline.” If you are trying to decide between the two titles by comparing bullet lists, you will spin for a week and end up posting whichever one your last competitor posted.
That 9-in-10 overlap has a practical consequence for your pipeline: candidates from both talent pools will apply to both reqs, and they will read your posting as whatever they already are. Post a GTM engineer req with RevOps bullets and you get forecast-and-governance people who have never written a Clay workflow. Post a RevOps req with engineer bullets and you get builders who will quietly stop doing the weekly deal desk work by month three.
The title is not the spec. The scope is the spec.
The two duties that actually separate them
There are exactly two signals in the posting data that reliably diverge, and both are about where the role’s center of gravity sits.
First, forecast accuracy. 76% of RevOps postings explicitly call out optimizing sales or revenue forecast accuracy as a distinct responsibility, while GTM engineer reqs lean toward optimizing outbound and prospecting. That is the cleanest fork in the road you will find. If the pain that opened this req is “we do not trust the number we give the board,” you are hiring RevOps. If it is “our outbound motion is manual and slow,” you are hiring a GTM engineer.
Second, CRM ownership. 98% of RevOps postings mention CRM ownership first and treat it as the foundation of the job. Not a bullet halfway down — the opening premise. For GTM engineer reqs, the CRM is one system among many, usually downstream of the enrichment and orchestration layer they are actually building.
And a third, softer signal worth weighting: code. SQL and Python each appear in 38% of GTM engineer postings. That is not universal — nearly two-thirds of GTM engineer reqs do not ask for either — but it is far above what ops reqs at the same level ask for. If your req needs someone who can write a query against the warehouse without filing a ticket, say so explicitly, because the title alone will not filter for it. Teams hiring for that depth usually end up running a GTM engineer search rather than a general ops search.
The comp gap runs the opposite direction from what people assume
Most hiring managers assume “engineer” in the title means a premium. Compared like for like on posted base ranges, it does not.

The RevOps median of $150K comes from 349 postings with disclosed compensation in 2026, with an average of $155K. The GTM engineer posted median of $127,500 comes from postings that published public ranges rather than third-party salary databases. Same methodology, same year, same kind of data — and RevOps clears the GTM engineer median by roughly $22,500.
What that means for you: if you convince finance to approve the “engineer” req because it sounds cheaper, you are not wrong on paper, but you are underwriting a narrower scope. And if you approve a GTM engineer req at a RevOps band, expect candidates to ask what happened to the forecast ownership — because at $150K they assume they are running the number.
Base or OTE — the gap flips depending on which you quote
Here is where most comp conversations fall apart. The $127,500 figure is a posted salary median. Total-comp benchmarks tell a different story: typical total compensation for US GTM engineers runs $132,000 to $241,000 with a median of $176,000.
So the honest answer to “which one costs more” is: it depends entirely on what you are measuring. Posted base, RevOps leads. Total comp including variable and equity, GTM engineer benchmarks sit well above the RevOps posted median. If your recruiter quotes you one number without saying which, you are going to lose an offer at the finish line.
Practical move: decide your structure before you post. GTM engineer candidates who came from the sales side often expect a variable component tied to pipeline — that is how you get from $127,500 to $176,000. RevOps managers usually expect a heavier base with a smaller bonus, because they cannot influence the number they are being asked to report accurately. Why the build work gets spun out into its own req
There is a structural reason GTM engineer reqs exist at all, and it shows up in the ops posting data: AI appeared in only 8% of Q1 2026 ops job postings.
Eight percent. The category of work that every board deck now opens with is present in fewer than one in twelve ops job descriptions. So when a CRO wants agents, enrichment waterfalls, signal-based routing and LLM-drafted sequences, the existing RevOps req cannot carry it — the language is not in the template and the incumbent band does not price it. The work gets cut out and posted as a GTM engineer req instead.
That is worth naming out loud, because it tells you what a GTM engineer req actually is in most companies: it is the net-new build surface that the ops function has not absorbed yet. If your ops team is already three people deep and governing the CRM well, a GTM engineer is additive and the scope is clean. If you have no ops function at all, hiring a GTM engineer first means nobody owns the forecast — and you will reopen a RevOps req within two quarters.
Both reqs compete in the same hiring band
One more thing that collapses the difference: manager and analyst/specialist roles make up nearly 60% of all ops postings. That is the band your GTM engineer req is competing in too. You are not bidding against a different market — you are bidding against every other company that wrote a nearly identical duty list in the same pay range.
Which is exactly why spray-and-pray sourcing fails on these two titles. A keyword search on “RevOps” and a keyword search on “GTM engineer” return substantially overlapping people, so volume does nothing for you. What moves the needle is screening on the fork: can this person defend a forecast methodology in front of a CFO, or can they ship a working automation in a week? Very few candidates are genuinely strong at both, and the ones who are get hired in days, not weeks — usually by someone who had the scope decided before the first call.
How to write the req you actually mean
Four decisions, in order.
Name the pain, not the title. Write one sentence describing what breaks today. If the sentence contains the word “number,” “forecast,” “pipeline hygiene” or “territory,” open a RevOps req. If it contains “manual,” “enrichment,” “outbound” or “we do this in a spreadsheet,” open a GTM engineer req.
Put the distinguishing duty in the first three bullets. Forecast accuracy or build-and-automate depth. Not bullet nine. Candidates self-select on the top of the list, and given the 9-in-10 overlap, everything below bullet three is noise.
Decide CRM governance explicitly. Someone has to own it. If it is this hire, say so and price it at the RevOps band. If it is someone else, say that too — GTM engineers who inherit undeclared CRM admin work leave.
Attach the band to the scope, not the title. Post the range. Choose base-heavy or OTE-heavy and be consistent with the scope you wrote.
